About
Jill’s artwork is mainly inspired by the natural environment, seeking to capture the colours, changing light, movement and atmosphere of the land and sea. Painting “close up” views of environments which might seem “ ordinary” are both challenging and appealing eg. vegetation, waves, rock formations or a bush tracks. Childhood on a farm in country South Australia and access to a beautiful coastline has contributed to her painting preferences.
She uses a diversity of pastel brands to support techniques in in interpreting her own experiences and reference photos.
Prior to discovering pastels Jill painted in watercolour and successfully exhibited mostly florals, detailed botanical studies and “mini environments”. Although rarely working in watercolour now, that past experience informs her work.
Pastel painting has been learned from PASA demonstrations, workshops with visiting Australian pastellists, 2022 Australian Pastel Expo and online tuition with international pastellists.
